Can this be configured so the user can only see the hyper-v file server, rather than the server desktop itself? Can we also configure different user profiles to only be able to view certain drives on the hyper-v?

If you already have VPN stick with that. Using Remote Web Access is fine but is less secure than a good VPN, especially if you don't take extra precautions to secure it, i. So, there's a few ways to do this.

What I think you're talking about is similar to what SBS servers offered in the past, which is the Remote Workspace provided by the Essentials role. Now, with that being said, it certainly isn't as secure as a good 'ol client VPN. It's best to set it up on a DMZ and to implement a two-factor authentication system like Duo. Another option you may want to consider is Workfolders. Think of this as a mapped drive over the internet, or something similar to ShareFile's drive mapper.

For Windows servers hosted on the Internet, things are a bit different because your server could physically be thousands of miles away. To access the desktop of an Internet-hosted server, Microsoft has created a feature known as Remote Desktop.

Please note that this article pertains only to those who have a Windows server, those with Linux servers can learn how to use SSH to access their server.
